The Factory of the Future

Siemens-FAU Research and Innovation Ecosystem

What a great journey it has been through the factory ecosystem of the future! We proudly look back on the Research and Innovation Ecosystem event week Erlangen-Nuremberg. The event series started with a virtual lab tour through the Institute of Factory Automation and Production Systems (FAPS) at FAU on October 14. In the course of the lab tour, there was not only the opportunity to get a closer look at the latest research projects of Siemens-FAU, but also flying drones as well as autonomous robotic systems were presented.

Did you miss the lab tour? Don’t worry, you can watch the tour anytime on YouTube!

The great and inspiring lab tour was followed by the first FAU-Siemens PhD & Alumni networking night on October 21. The networking night offered the chance to meet former FAU students and a special highlight was the Science Slam by FAU-Alumnus and Siemens employee Johannes Vorsamer. After this long time with virtual online meetings, it was even nicer to get back into the personal exchange. Are you also an FAU alumni who now works at Siemens, and you missed the PhD and Alumni networking night? Then join the FAU-Siemens Alumni Community and never miss again any great event!

The grand finale of this great week celebrating the RIE Erlangen-Nuremberg was the Siemens-FAU RIE Conference on Friday, October 22 live from the brand-new open innovation lab – JOSPEHS.

Leading experts in smart manufacturing platforms, analytics and services took the over 700 online and 40 VIP onsite participants on a journey through the ecosystem of the factory of the future. We were very happy to welcome Roland Busch (CEO Siemens), Joachim Hornegger (President of FAU), Alexander Martin (Director at Fraunhofer), Jörg Franke (Chairholder of the Institute FAPS) and last but not least Marina Wallisch (Vice President Service for Factory Automation at Siemens). Together, the experts discussed after their interesting keynotes further opportunities and risks of the factory of the future in an exciting panel discussion.

These new, fascinating and future-oriented impulses were followed by three startup pitches. Here the latest business ideas, innovations and business models from ROBOTOP, QuartRevo as well as Arfintiy / HoloLayer were presented.

Another highlight of the conference was the launch of the Siemens Research and Innovation Ecosystem (RIE) Erlangen-Nuremberg by Natascha Eckert (Siemens Global Head of University Relations) and Kathrin Möslein (FAU Vice President – Outreach)! This international network of researchers, students and employees will make a big difference in the future.
